For decades, what SOG did across the fence stayed classified. The front reads DECLASSIFIED in an arch. The back carries the MACV-SOG shield, the years 1964 and 1972, and a ring of stars.

Studies and Observations Group

MACV-SOG was a classified special operations unit that ran reconnaissance missions into Laos, Cambodia and North Vietnam. Small recon teams of Green Berets and indigenous soldiers went across the fence for days at a time. Their work stayed secret for decades.
